Single Electric – 7 pin
Single Electric – 7 pin sockets are a common wiring configuration used for towing trailers or caravans.
There are 3 types of towing electric sockets to choose from depending on your personal preference and towing needs. They are single 7 pin electrics (12N towing electrics). Twin 7 pin electrics (a combination of 12N and 12S towing electrics). Single 13 pin electrics.
Single electrics with a 7-pin connector provide the necessary electrical connections between the vehicle and the trailer. They allow for the transmission of essential signals, such as lighting, brake, and indicator functions, from the vehicle to the trailer, ensuring proper and safe operation while towing.
They typically consist of seven wires within the towbar wiring loom, each serving a specific function. The most common wiring configuration for a 7-pin connector is as follows:
-
- Pin 1: Left-hand indicator
- Pin 2: Fog lamp
- Pin 3: Ground (earth)
- Pin 4: Right-hand indicator
- Pin 5: Right-hand tail, side, and number plate lights
- Pin 6: Brake lights
- Pin 7: Left-hand tail, side, and number plate lights
Single electrics with a 7-pin connectors are compatible with trailers or caravans that have a corresponding 7-pin socket. It’s important to ensure that the electrical system of the trailer or caravan is designed to work with a 7-pin configuration.
In some cases, additional wiring may be required depending on the specific requirements of the trailer or caravan being towed. This could include extra wiring for features such as electric trailer brakes or additional power supply for charging leisure batteries.
If you encounter a situation where your vehicle has a different wiring configuration or if you need to tow a trailer with a different connector type, adapters are available to convert the electrical connection from on type to another.
