Easter set to cause mayhem on our roads…

Easter set to cause mayhem on our roads…

A four-day weekend for most of us… perfect! A little planning ahead may be required, however. Unfortunately, it seems we all have the same idea; let’s visit family or let’s get away for the weekend.

As we flee to the motorways it is estimated that 20 million cars will be on the UK’s roads over Easter, resulting in a 20% increase in the average number of cars. Peak times could even reach 28.4% which is 30% up on the holidays last year.

The worst affected roads will be major motorways with some journeys predicted to take up to three times longer than usual. Drivers between junctions 9 and 21 on the M25 (both ways) should expect delays of up to 1 hour and 30 minutes, extending a typical journey from 40 minutes to over two hours, with the average speed falling to 17 miles per hour. Drivers heading in both directions on the M6 and southbound on the M5 towards the West Country should be prepared for delays of almost an hour and average speeds of less than 25 miles per hour.

Railway engineering works and tube closures will also impact traffic levels forcing more of us to drive. Be sure to check these online before planning a route around major cities such as London.

We have broken down the predicted vehicle increase by day to help you to choose when to travel… If you could wait until this morning, you could save yourself a lot of time. Of course, easier said than done when you finish work and just want to set off to make the most of the holiday weekend!

Good Friday – 15% increase

Easter Saturday – 10% increase

Easter Sunday – 25% decrease

Easter Monday – 20% increase

Drivers are being advised to avoid travelling between 10am-2pm on Friday and 12-5pm on Monday.

With many shops expected to be closed, Easter Sunday remains the quietest day for cars on the road, with 25% fewer vehicles expected compared to an average Sunday.

Pack an extra Easter egg for the journey and have a wonderful long weekend.
